Review of Bad Lieutenant (1992) by Jonathan B — 22 Jul 2008
Harvey Keitel gives an amazing performance that very few actors in history would have been able to match. Do not go into this film expecting a simple movie about a bad ass police officer who beats up anyone in his way.
It is a much more complex and intelligent film than that, and anyone who likes simplicity will be left disappointed. This movie may have been a little too arty for my tastes, but it did keep me interested and thinking about what each scene meant.
This is also a very violent and depressing film that focuses on drugs, depravity, and our personal sins and shortcomings. There are also no real distractions from the brutality, since the dialog is very limited, there are almost no supporting characters, and there is a complete lack of comic relief.
