It takes a long time to figure out this is more than just a pointless, nihilistic hate-letter to modern society. Essentially, this is still a very dark movie, that shows, that your personal redemption will have no effect whatsoever on the surrounding world.
With its strong religious themes, it seems to suggest there is no God.
