Strange. Odd. Bizarre. Bewildering. Bemusing. All adjectives that can be used to describe Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant. Ferrara is a director whose never afraid to present the shocking side of life in his films (Driller Killer, anyone?) and Bad Lieutenant is no exception.

It hangs on a truly astonishing lead performance from Harvey Kietel. He bravely lets it all hang out, both physically and emotionally, in a performance that sees him take copious amounts of drugs, walk around naked flapping his arms and making strange noises, and masterbate in front of two young girls.

Kietel is the heart and soul of the film. He starts off as an absolute prick until the brutal and graphic rape of a nun gives him a chance at redemption. While undoubtedly these are interesting themes, I didn't care much for Bad Lieutenant.

It was cold and bleak, and generally unenjoyable. Kietel was awesome in it, but it's hardly a fun evenings viewing.
