Review of Bad Lieutenant (1992) by Jim M — 31 Jul 2009
Harvey Keitel is the unamed Police Lieutenant, a bent cop who steals to help control a gambling problem. When not shacking down citizens he's usually indulging in Coke, Crack, Heroin and Hookers. His downword spiral until he witnesses something beyond his comprehension. A young nun is brutally raped. She forgives her assailants, sending the Lieutenant a severly lapsed Catholic face to face with his own sins...and opening him up to the possabilty of finding some measure of redemption.
Damn. Abel Ferrara and Harvey Keital soften nothing here, earning everybit of the NC-17 raiting. Not a pretty or a pleasent film too watch it doea have more going for it then shock value. Ferrara and Keital show the Lieutenants degenracy and spirtual anguish, contrast it with the Nuns faith, and then ask what, if any redemption is possable for this man. Not an easy film too watch but worthwhile and in its own way a masterpiece.
