Review of Bad Lieutenant (1992) by Thomas L — 22 May 2010
Kietels titular lieutenant is much more than bad in this film he seems corrupt to the core. When he isn't racking up his debts to a local bookie he is having a threesome or getting high. His job means nothing to him and he only intervenes when he feels it will benefit him.
Even his children give him no joy. However when he starts investigation the rape of a young nun he tries to somewhat change his ways. Although you have heard it before renegade cop, a bad guy turns good this film is nothing like you would expect.
There is no light in this film it is dark and seedy abs this is mirrored by the cinematopgraphy. These are the mean streets of new York the reall underbelly. This is defintely not a film that entertains in the traditional sense because there is no joy , no redemption.
However it is an amazingly directed film, well written and Kietel is delivers a showstopping performance. This is independant cinema at it's best.
