Review of Bad Lieutenant (1992) by John S — 12 Apr 2011
I always tend to rate a movie based on the performances and not the movie itself. The Bad Lieutenant basically is a one man tour de force. Harvey Keitel is as good as Brando or Pacino at their best as a detective whose serious gambling and drug addiction is bringing his life to a close, and he knows it.
He's making one last stab at redemption, and basically is putting his entire life on the line by putting an enormous wager on the World Series. The thin plot of the story involves his attempt to solve the rape of a nun, but that, and all the other characters in the film don't matter.
Keitel's performance is so gripping that the thinness of the plot and lack of any other well drawn characters don't matter a bit.
