Keitel is convincing as the self-destructing hard drinking, drug-taking, deviant cop, but the character so lacks charisma it is hard to feel anything but disgust for him. The direction similarly lacks panache - most notably during the scenes of sexual assault on a nun - about as subtle as a cricket bat to the head.
