Review of Bad Lieutenant (1992) by Arash B — 08 Nov 2012
Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant" is much like Oliver Stone's "The Doors" in the emotions it elicits from the audience-the overall feel of the film is lugubrious and painful. At the end of the day, this film is a noble effort, and certainly a much better film than "The Doors".
Still, the distended vibe chips away at its audience's attention, and a little bit of this film goes a long way. There are some great scenes here-anything regarding the rape of the sister is very well done-and Harvey Keitel is phenomenal.
However, the film unfortunately begins to weigh itself down with the burdens of a successful character study. The film also suffers by comparison to Herzog's movie of a similar plot/title. "Bad Lieutenant" proves that Abel Ferrara is a great talent that simply needs practice.
