There's a genuine paean to the groundbreaking NYC social realist filmmakers in the way Ferrara frames and holds certain shots, and Keitel definitely pours his blood, sweat and tears onto the center stage of this reviling plunge into the ash heap of compulsion, self-hatred and debasement.
