Grimy, sleazy, and quite depressing, this is Harvey Keitel's signature role and he put everything he had into it. The movie unfortunately loses steam in the last third and only the final shot (pun intended) brings it back to life.
There are some memorably shocking moments like the rape of a nun and the harrassment of two girls in a car that stick with you.
