A sort of psycho-sexual film noir. Much of the impression the audience gets of the film's characters is communicated in subtext. Almodovar can create whole scenes based on characters looking at one another, it's really brilliant.
The vibrancy of the colors is an interesting counterpoint to the dark themes being explored.
