This was very similar to 'Broken Embraces' in which different timelines were interspersed, a film was created within the film, and it involved the same unattractive, seedy old man lusting for a younger, Adonis.
It seems to be a device Almodovar likes to employ. It was also an opportunity for Gael Garcia Bernal to showcase his versatility as an actor, and he certainly impressed.
