Review of Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) by Devon — 11 Sep 2008
Spencer Tracy stars as a disabled WWII vet who's travelling out west. He stops in a small desert ranch town because he wants to present a Japanese farmer with the medals his dead son won overseas, but unfortunately, he can't seem to turn this farmer up.
From the minute he steps off the train, he's greeted with hostility: the hotel clerk says they're all booked up (even though every room is vacant), the other ranchers give him unfriendly stares and questions.
.. all except for one, who seems a little too friendly. "Bad Day At Black Rock" is a study in fear, a study in anger, and a study in tension. Spencer Tracy does an excellent job as a one-armed vet who's trapped in a town which conspires against him, and the only way out is the train that doesn't arrive til the next day.
