Review of Bad Boys II (2003) by Yash S — 10 Sep 2010
I suppose this is a bit of a paradox. On one hand, there is no real intelligence in how this is put together. On the other, there is an entire market of people who love precisely this kind of coarse, mindless lowbrow "action-movie". The crassness and cheesiness is what they thrive on, and these people will consume this product outright. So from a producer's point of view, its the safest investment.
I dont believe that this cannot be improved, even within the parameters stated above. For one thing, Bay's method is to shoot first and worry about the editing later. This "works", because at least he is able to deliver some dazzling images, and so the editing doesnt really matter that much. But it doesnt allow for more complex strategies, either in the depth of the narrative or the characters' emotions. The freeway chase is the height of Bay's creativity.
