Review of Bad Boy Bubby (1993) by Dan B — 25 Nov 2009
Australian oddity with a mesmerizing central performance, which mixes darkness and innocence like a Candide with severe mental health problems, or a Forrest Gump with Tourettes. With unshowy but at times beautiful photography (by 32 different cinematographers, no less), the film is vaguely reminiscent of the work of Lynch or Herzog, though less mannered than the former and less bleak than the latter.
Not the easiest watch, but stick with it, because just when you think youâ??ve got the measure of it, the film heads off in a surprising new direction. Recommended.
