Review of Backcountry (2015) by Jason O — 20 May 2016

Wow was this bad. Cheesy dialogue and a very thin plot make this a sort of short, woodsy horror flick. SPOILER: The manner in which the hikers manage to get 'lost" (they're still on the trail they came in on when they start to freak out.

..why not just go back,) is pretty silly and hard to swallow. There are all sorts of survival issues here that go unaddressed, all the while the focus is on gore and fear induction. The actors are playing hikers, but don't seem like real hikers in their behavior.

The black bear is playing a black bear, but isn't acting at all like a normal black bear encountering humans, more like a rabid Kodiak on steroids. The plot is roughly: 1. Couple goes into woods. 2.

Couple gets lost 3. Couple encounter a black bear. 4. Couple meets fate. 6. The end. Anyone who actually hikes, knows a bit about black bear behavior, or has even been in the woods for a hot second will probably find the suspension of disbelief to heavy to (bear).

If you're going to sacrifice the feeling of reality in a survival flick, the payoff had better be good, except in this movie, there is no payoff.
