Review of Backcountry (2015) by Brett H — 16 Sep 2015
A completely standard survival story with next to no surprises but is strongly elevated by the performance from Missy Peregrym and some well-executed bear attack scenes. Based on a true story, the filmmakers twisted the facts around to better serve the typical Hollywood film, and this aggravated me to no end as I'm tired of the male always being depicted as the one to blame and the woman is 100% letting herself be led by an idiot.
This is insulting to both genders and unfortunately veterans of film as I knew exactly what was going to happen as soon as I met our two characters. This is the first feature from director Adam MacDonald and he does a stellar job crafting the isolated atmosphere and I applaud him for using practical effects and even a real bear in some scenes! However, you've seen this film before and apart from one horribly graphic bear attack, not much resonated and I'll forget about it pretty quickly.
