Review of Backbeat (1994) by Caleb M — 27 Sep 2008
An engaging, entertaining and very interesting look at the early life of the Beatles and the relationship between Stuart Sutcliffe and john Lennon. The visuals match the mood and feeling of Beatle memorabilia and the actors bring more to their characters than just familiar looks and characteristics, particularly Ian Hart as John Lennon.
The music is excellent as well, featuring modern pop-punk inspired covers of songs the Beatles themselves covered. My only real complaint is that there are an awful lot of sex scenes. Not that I mind seeing Sheryl Lee naked and all, but it gets to feel a bit exploitative and cheesy after a while.
