Review of Backbeat (1994) by Rebecca F — 04 Mar 2008
Ultimately Backbeat ends up being a film of two halves. The first half which charts The Beatles early days in Hamburg from the point of Stuart Sutcliffe is highly entertaining stuff. Ian Hart is great as John Lennon and outshines his one dimensional co-star Stephen Dorff. It's in the second half of the film when the attention shifts from Lennon and co to Sutcliffes relationship with Sheryl Lee's photographer Astrid that the film loses it's way amongst scenes of art house parties and painting by numbers sex orgies. By the end the movie, tragic as it is, has fallen a little flat.
Still, Stephen Dorff's hair does look fantastic as always.
