Review of Back to the Future Part II (1989) by Da L — 30 Jul 2012
Robert Zemeckis - the genius behind the original - epitomises that sequels can be as good as the predecessors with Back to the Future Part II.
When Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) travel to the future of 2015, they realise something has happened...something terrible. By the time they return to the present of 1985, George McFly (Jeffrey Weissman) is dead and Biff (Thomas F. Wilson) is his step-father; the evil mastermind has managed to change time, he is now a billionaire and the husband of Marty's mother! Marty and the Doc require to travel back to 1955 in order to prevent these disastrous occurrences.
Other may disagree but I found Part II to the trilogy much more entertaining than part I due to the twists and turns it entailed. It was a much more complex idea than the first - a time travelling rom-com - with stronger characterisation and a more engaging plot line with fresh ideas.
Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd continue their fabulous on-screen chemistry while villain Biff is portrayed with ease by Thomas F. Wilson.
If it lacked anything it was the charm and originality that the predecessor possessed; the second time round you already have a reasonable idea of what could be going on.
Still, this is fabulous, intellectual, not to mention hilarious entertainment for the whole family - young and old.
