Review of Back to the Future Part II (1989) by Hector C — 06 Jan 2013
Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd return for the sequel of the much loved sci-fi comedy Back to the Future. We pick up where we left off, with Marty and Doc flying off to the future in an attempt to save the McFly family name.
Viewers are thrown straight into the action, with punches being thrown, a chase (purposefully very similar to one its predecessor) and some truly awful acting on Thomas F. Wilsonâ(TM)s part that borders suicidal. In fact it isnâ(TM)t just the Wilsonâ(TM)s performance that is borderline suicidal, but the first half of the film, is so unbelievably tacky and awful that it seems like a completely different film from its marvellous predecessor.
However at some point during the middle of the film, cannot quite remember when, the film transforms into something remarkably similar to the first film. Because whilst itâ(TM)s enjoyable to watch, the second half is a sort of photocopy of the first film (similar to a photocopier because there are minor differences, like colour and bits are cut off the edges etc.). In fact they are so similar that the climax mostly takes place where the end of the first one took place, at the school dance. I think a good example of the similarity, is the way that one scene from the first one is taken and recycled into the second one, using a hoverboard instead of a skateboard is the only difference.
This film is split into two parts, a truly awful work of cinema and then a copied piece of cinema. It seems Zemeckis and Gale have been so hinged on the success of the first one, they didnâ(TM)t want to exit their comfort zone.
