Review of Back to the Future (1985) by Leif T — 13 Feb 2013
Oh yeah, it's Back to the Future time! Released in 1985, Back to Future is one of the greatest Sci-Fi/Comedy films of all time. But, what is it that makes people continue to remember this film? Let's dive in and see!
The story surrounds Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) as he's sent back in time to 1955. Marty is a skateboarding, guitar playing, punk who works along side his friend, Doctor Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd). Doc Brown is a scientists who is always coming up with crazy inventions. However, it just so happens that Doc has created a successful invention: a time machine. This is a shock to both Doc and Marty. But, Doc is shot down by terrorists, and while driving away Marty sends himself accidentally to 1955. Here he meets his parents, and a younger Doc.
The major strength to this film are the characters. They are very well acted and have fun personalities. George McFly (Crispin Glover) is a wimpy nerd, Doc Brown is always babbling science words, and Marty seems caught in the middle. However, my favorite is Biff (Thomas F. Wilson) who plays as a great bully. I won't dare spoil his fate, but it's definitely worth it!
The writing is also very slick and smart. There are lots of tiny jokes that always result in laughter. There are some great lines that everyone continues to quote. In fact this film is so good, few of the actors could ever top this one.
I've always been a fan of the kinds of movies where someone needs to settle in a new time period (Pleasantville, Meet the Robinsons) but Back to the Future is by far the best. There's really not much else to say without spoiling it, and that my friends I do not want to do. Check it out for a great time!
