Review of Back to the Future (1985) by Manicure — 22 Nov 2020
I survived all my childhood without watching “Back to the Future”, and without nostalgia to fall back upon, I can confidently say that even though it didn’t age that well, it’s at least a little above the standard of mid-80s popcorn entertainment.
It’s cheesy as **** and full of awkward prepuberal (un)coolness (the Enchantment Under the Sea scenes being the most painful to watch), but as a family film it still does its work pretty well. The way Marty ends up altering the future is actually interesting, and something that would probably not happen in such a film nowadays.
I was not really fond of the happy ending that sees Marty reborn as the stereotypical 1980s yuppie, no longer in the same family of losers “with a capital L” he used to dislike. It just went from one cartoony extreme to another.
