Review of Back to School (1986) by Kenny O — 12 Mar 2010
This ramshackle comedy steals its plot from any number of other college-set movies, and is so lazy with the plotting that the romantic subplots of the father and son characters are pretty much identical mirrors of each other.
However, considering the father is played by Rodney Dangerfield, and the entire movie is basically a setup to allow him to reel off as many one-liners as possible, who really cares? Dangerfield is in top form, constantly hysterical throughout.
The film's energy notably sags during the rare times he's not on the screen, even with Robert Downey, Jr. in a supporting role. It would usually be impossible to say a movie this shoddily put together as "good", but since the film's only purpose is to have Dangerfield make us laugh, it's a success.
Good reviews for everyone!
