Review of Back to School (1986) by Shane D — 18 Aug 2013
The film career of Rodney Dangerfield is an interesting one. At the time, there was no lower rung on the ladder than the Rodney Dangerfield films on the "Coming Soon" previews on each of those VHS rentals in the mid to late 80s.
..yet in 2013, he is a revered comedy icon. Back To School is the best example of what Dangerfield had to offer during his 80s renaissance, it is often hilarious, occasionally a little out dated and sometimes just plain bad.
..but that was the charm of the man. He was the master of the "sleazy dad joke". In comparison to other T & A films of the 80s at least this film does come from comedy pedigree (also featuring Sam Kinnison) and Dangerfield does save it from being just another frat house boob fest.
Perhaps only watchable to those who lived through the VHS years...but enjoyable nevertheless.
