Review of Bachelor Mother (1939) by Jay K — 28 Jun 2011
A basic story with Ginger Rodgers as leading lady, playing a hard working young girl at a supermarket, selling Donald Duck-toys. It's christmas and she's working her last days for the mall, since most of the employes must go when christmas is over.
She passes by an old lady who is just about to leave a little basket containing a baby, at the doorstep of the orphanage. She picks it up to soothe the crying baby and then leave it at the orphanage. The staff, assumes that the baby is hers and give her some accusing looks and indicting remarks.
Well, one thing leads to another and Ginger realises that by keeping the baby and pretending it's her, she even gets the chance to keep her job.
Ginger Rodgers at her best. Her performance is outstanding. David Niven is good as well, as son of her boss, who eventally starts courting her.
Type example of a good classic feel-good comedy! And yes, it's even better than The Major and the Minor. You don't have to be a classics geek to appreciate this!
