Review of Babylon A.D. (2008) by Robert T — 21 Aug 2009
I wasn't really interested in viewing this film at first, but actually watched it when it aired on HBO earlier this evening. I have to agree with the majority on this one, the film was not that good.
I was somewhat confused with the film's premise. So the film was set in the near future, yet everything seems so 2008/2009 -- even some of the cars that were on the roads. In addition, the film's cast was not on par with your typical action flick.
As a matter of fact, the cast was just not even that interesting. Not sure if it was because of the actor or just the character they've played, but I was not that interested in any of them. I do not consider myself a huge Vin Diesel fan, even though I have seen some of his past work, but noticed his character in this film was very similar to other characters he has portrayed in the past -- especially his action flicks.
He needs to branch out. Honestly, I thought this film could have been the third installment of "The Chronicles of Riddick" -- minus the space and weird creatures, of course. One thing that I thought stood out was some of the visual effects, but sadly, not even to bring the film back from the dead.
Some things that I did not like was the random and oddly choreographed action scenes, the film's plot, and the character development. I noticed Vin Diesel's character shifted from being a "bad ass" to "Jesus-like" toward the end of the film.
Somewhat cliche, in my opinion. But overall, the could have been good. The film's title sounded very interesting, but sadly, the film fell flat -- really flat.
