Review of Babylon A.D. (2008) by Vincent B — 01 Oct 2009
The best thing about Babylon A.D. is the look of it with grimy, packed, intimidating near-future slums and marketplaces slowly giving way to snowy wastelands and finally the advertisement-saturated brilliance of New York City.
It also has an impressive cast with Vin Diesel (an ideal choice for any Mercenary With A Conscience role, especially with that awesome voice of his), Michelle Yeoh, Mark Strong and Lambert Wilson as well as the unknown but effective (and cute) Melanie Thierry.
The action is OK (though nothing special), the story - to begin with - is not exactly original but still mysterious and interesting and overall the first three-quarters of the movie is very enjoyable.
Unfortunately it quite badly goes off the rails towards the end as the mysteries surrounding Melanie Thierry's character are revealed and it all starts getting very, VERY silly, culminating in an ending that resolves little and will leave nothing but a ton of questions on your mind, the primary one being a general - and exasperated - "What the hell?!".
