Review of Babylon (2022)

By Justin Chang (1,535) for Los Angeles Times (12,977) on 22 Dec 2022

I’ll admit that I found much of Babylon mesmerizing, even when (maybe especially when) I also found it naive, bludgeoning and obtuse…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Peter Debruge (1,557) for Variety (12,700) on 22 Dec 2022

Chazelle has essentially orchestrated a loud, vulgar live-action cartoon of a film, and while it’s exhilarating at times to witness the sheer…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Mike Scott (1,178) for New Orleans Times-Picayune (573) on 21 Dec 2022

As outrageous and fun as Babylon can be, it feels even more self-indulgent than happy hour on Mardi Gras…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Karen Gordon (174) for Original-Cin (1,156) on 21 Dec 2022

Ambitious in the sweep of history that it chronicles, it’s a sometimes entertaining, often sordid movie about movies in the earliest Hollywood…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Richard Roeper (2,737) for Chicago Sun-Times (7,580) on 21 Dec 2022

Despite some admittedly impressive production design and the star-power presence of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, Babylon comes across as a…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Jake Coyle (526) for The Associated Press (882) on 20 Dec 2022

Though it may be a chaotic shamble, Chazelle’s film makes this one point brilliantly clear: Cinema will be tamed for only so long; the parade…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Michael Phillips (2,622) for Chicago Tribune (6,211) on 20 Dec 2022

Loosely entwining a half-dozen major characters, though two or three get disappointingly short shrift, “Babylon” thins out all too quickly,…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Ann Hornaday (1,919) for Washington Post (9,851) on 20 Dec 2022

Like so many recent films — “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Belfast,” “The Fabelmans,” “Empire of Light” — Babylon wants…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Barry Hertz (792) for The Globe and Mail (Toronto) (4,018) on 19 Dec 2022

The kind of full-throated, barrel-chested, more-more-more exercise in gusto and ambition that comes around once a decade, Babylon might either…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By James Berardinelli (4,524) for ReelViews (4,523) on 19 Dec 2022

Babylon is uneven, to be sure, but any missteps are more than compensated for by the exultation derived from the moments of frenetic exuberance…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Brian Tallerico (1,600) for RogerEbert.com (5,563) on 19 Dec 2022

A great score, a talented ensemble, and expert cinematography—all are undeniable here…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Vince Mancini (256) for Uproxx (697) on 16 Dec 2022

Babylon is a movie that absolutely shouldn’t work, but objectively does, three hours and nine minutes that didn’t bore me for a single…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Clarisse Loughrey (259) for The Independent (259) on 16 Dec 2022

The film’s vision of the Twenties may be propelled to the very border of believability, but it’s rarely inauthentic…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Alex Saveliev (258) for Film Threat (5,156) on 16 Dec 2022

With Babylon, Chazelle laments and condemns; he documents and romanticizes. There’s truth beneath the embellishments…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Robbie Collin (1,612) for The Telegraph (1,120) on 16 Dec 2022

The film is thrillingly reckless enough to make you genuinely dread what’s coming next…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Mick Lasalle (3,303) for San Francisco Chronicle (7,630) on 16 Dec 2022

Don’t mistake his movie’s lack of sentimentality for callousness. Babylon is coarse, hard and wild, but its emotion is undeniable…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Tomris Laffly (460) for The A.V. Club (5,644) on 16 Dec 2022

Babylon mostly operates in a structure of set pieces, thoroughly earning its not-a-minute-too-long runtime—a whopping 189 minutes—and it’s…

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Ross Bonaime (185) for Collider (1,032) on 16 Dec 2022

Review of Babylon (2022)

By Clint Worthington (295) for Consequence (296) on 16 Dec 2022

Babylon slowly builds up its wackadoo cartoon version of Hollywood to tear it down at its foundation…

Review of Babylon (2022)
