Review of Baby Mama (2008) by Jess K — 30 Oct 2009
I am unabashedly in love with Tina Fey (what can I say, smart and funny is totally hot), nonetheless I can admit that her films so far, as opposed to the last couple seasons of 30 Rock, have been as toothless as a newborn.
In this case the movie too often errs on the side of cutesy (all the baby craziness) and silly (Amy Poehler, just in general). Still, there is some hilariously clever material here, mostly the stuff satirizing the pregnancy process and the organic/raw food trend (including Steve Martin's unpublicized role).
Truth is, if Tina Fey wasn't the writer/star, this movie would've been another disposable comedy, and possibly is even with her. Hopefully some day her films can put away the kids gloves and break out the brass knuckles.
