Review of Baby Driver (2017) by Luka M — 11 Mar 2018
Baby Driver was the sole thing that made my summer worth anything.
I lived months on end with repetitive days feeling more robotic than human. I felt lonely at night when I tucked my own body in bed and realizing the lack of drive I had... Lucky, Baby Driver changed all of that.
It left me gripped in my seat: eyes wide, grinning from ear to ear, goose bumps all over my arms and wanting so badly to shout and kiss the person next to me. The film was just all that: exciting, reckless, soulful.
I was singing back home - something that I haven't done in years - of T.Rex's "Debora," which was a featured soundtrack in the film. The entire film is based off the soundtrack that displayed over 70 tunes and included great names like The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Queen.
What really made my lips quiver and my heart scream inside out was the last diner scene when baby and buddy shared earbuds with each other as buddy softly sing the lyrics to "Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up" by Barry White.
The film completely aced the character relationship developments and the portrayal of said developments. I think that's what really broke me in the end because we witness their last goodbye over an extremely powerful song before they turn to a shootout against each other.
Ansel Elgort (Baby)'s performance was expressive and phenomenal, easily switching from in love to fear to wrath as CJ Jones (Joseph the foster parent) gave a warm character to support Baby throughout.
Action packed, humorous, and sweet, Baby Driver made me feel human again.
