Review of Baby Driver (2017) by John W — 12 Jan 2018
The beauty of a soundtrack is that it gives an added layer to life. It puts us in the right mood, and when everyday things sync up to the rhythm of the music, it's like a small miracle. An entire film based upon getting that miracle to manifest itself on screen would be a chore to sit through because of the predictability that rhythm inevitably brings, which is why those scenes are limited to set pieces such as character introductions and action sequences.
But apart from that, there really isn't anything that much interesting in the movie. The characters are all two-dimensional, with the exception of Baby and Jamie Foxx's Bats, and even Baby isn't all that deep either. If you limit your enjoyment to music, rhythm, and action, then you will no doubt love this movie. If you want more (like character work, or you know, plot), then you may be disappointed.
