Review of Baby Driver (2017) by Jak-Luke S — 23 Jul 2017
Part exceptional, part contemporary trash. Wright builds a world from so many homages they start to feel just like that -homages, and throughout feels like the film is begging its audience to like it and find it cool.
His direction is second to none, arguably perfect and I wouldn't disagree, his use of camera and editing is truly terrific but the film has both unlikeable characters and a poor script. The films use of music is also a positive, it's interwoven within the film in a way that could've been an utter disaster but the end result is marvellous.
However, I would go as far as saying that this film has the exact same issues as Suicide Squad does, apart from having a stronger direction, both have hollow and unlikable characters with a similar use of music.
The only difference is that people won't actually admit it because it's directed by acclaimed director Edgar Wright.
