Review of Baby Driver (2017) by Anna B — 14 Jul 2017
There's two actual car chases in this movie, they both happen in the first act, and all the best moments from them were in the trailer. And they're surprisingly visually confusing. So that was a bit disappointing.
My favourite part was actually the initial flirtation and romance between Elgort and James; they have good chemistry and their dialogue is fresh. But I found the grim tonal shift in the second half really uninteresting, and I hated the aftermath of the last heist and the final confrontation in the parking garage.
Lots of running and gunning, banging and screeching and yelling, none of it remotely interesting to look at. Or listen to. I blame my local cinema's sound mix for that part. I have an educated hunch that if I ever watch this movie again on my good TV with headphones on I'll get what Wright was going for.
As it was, all I heard were a bunch of loud noises with the occasional gunshot or car door slamming in time to a faintly-heard beat.
