Review of Baby Driver (2017) by Natalie M — 05 Jul 2017
Baby Driver was a nice breath of fresh air in a summer of big budget action and superhero movies, many a flop. From the opening credits, other than being told it is an Edgar Wright film, you can see Edgar Wright written all over the directing and writing. Much like the Cornetto trilogy, Edgar Wright again shows his ability to match both music and sound to movements, making his films more of a choreographed dance rather than just a movie. He shows that he is able to do action sequences with ease as the car chasing and fight scenes are shot beautifully, almost feeling as though you are in the car with the characters.
The story is simple and timeless but with a little Edgar Wright spin. You feel attachments to all the characters even though there are a few. Edgar Wright's writing does this but giving you enough information about them but doesn't overpower you with it, just enough to get you invested in the story and their arcs. Ansel Elgort produces a great performance, mainly portrayed in body language rather than speech, displaying he is someone to watch for. Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx both pull out great performances, but this is expected out of the two Academy Award winning actors. The female actors are also given more to do than the average female character in an action movie, however Lily James' character could have been given more.
Overall, this film is entertaining and fun, when you leave the theatre you will have a smile on your face.
