Review of Baby Driver (2017) by Steve R — 03 Jul 2017

I seem to be largely in the minority with my rating of "Baby Driver" but I'm afraid I can't score it any higher. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it, but it's not the masterpiece many are claiming it to be.

Edgar Wright's latest infuses music meticulously to the events that are happening on screen, it is very clever but after a while I found it quite annoying, especially in one shoot out section.

The film is beautifully shot and edited and the driving sequences are thrilling. Performances are all solid, especially from Kevin Spacey and John Hamm. Ansel Elgort puts in a solid performance as "baby" and all in all it's a solid production.

My main issue was with the plot or lack of. It's literally 75 minutes before anything of interest actually happens and then it all sort of ties together quite quickly. I was waiting for some sort of double cross anything to take me by surprise and sadly it never happens which badly effects the film as a whole.

It's basically a case of style over substance and is not a patch on Wright's earlier work, it does showcase that he is a great visual director and I would have loved to have seen his version of "Ant Man".

I would recommend you see it as an "experience" but keep your expectations in check and just enjoy the ride.
