Review of Baby Driver (2017) by Dan L — 05 Jul 2018
Though Baby Driver is very formulaic, it's stylish, fun, and fast-paced, and that's all thanks to Edgar Wright, who made arguably his best film yet. The story isn't anything impressive, but what is impressive is Wright's meticulous direction. Many of the action scenes are synced with the music that's featured in the film. Even character actions are choreographed with the music, whether they're shooting, running, or just getting coffee.
All of the performances are fantastic. Not only did they have to be charismatic, but they also have to time their actions in certain scenes, and they all lived up to the task. Jamie Foxx did try a little bit too hard to act tough, but I bought his performance overall. Ansel Elgort was compelling in the lead role, but Jon Hamm definitely stole the show for me.
Though the movie does go off the rails a little bit in the third act (specifically in scenes involving the love interest), Baby Driver is a great action movie overall. It's basically Drive, but with more action, more music, and a lot more humour. For Edgar Wright completist (or just anyone who loves movies), this is a movie not to be missed. It's the best film of 2017 I've seen so far.
