Review of Baby Driver (2017) by Tyler V — 06 Jul 2017

Edgar Wright's direction paired with the filled to the brim cast knocked this film out of the ballpark. The upbeat nature of the heightened world that these characters inhabit really clashed nicely with the classic themes and aesthetic of the 60's-80's.

All members of the cast are excellently used to their full potential, even the ones with a few moments of screen time. Ansel Elgort played Baby beautifully, oozing with confidence, and charisma, and the chemistry between him and other characters felt very intimate and real at times.

One character that blended very well with Baby was Lily James' Debora, these two obviously have copious amounts of chemistry that was welcomed by the audience every time they shared the screen together.

The music was almost like its very own character, the songs fit nicely and all played into the grand scope of the picture, sometimes depicting the characters' moods very cleverly. The action was well filmed and choreographed, with the music being a key part in each action set piece.

The script is simple and focused, with the main character driving the plot both literally and figuratively, and it never holds the audiences' hand or is heavy handed, which is always welcomed. Being a Wright film, a strong bout of comedy is also expected and, similar to his previous films, most of if not all of the jokes land gloriously.

You're not beaten over the head with jokes that you're supposed to laugh at. Overall, a phenomenal experience from start to finish, excellently boasting its charm, charisma, style, and character; things that most films from 2017 are lacking, and a soundtrack to rival that of Awesome Mix Vol.

1 and 2.
