Review of Baby Driver (2017) by Pj A — 30 Jun 2017
A brash homage to the 1950's United Artists 'moonshine runner' flix, 'Baby Driver' begins with a bang...and, is great mindless fun whenever vehicles are in motion. Unfortunately, Edgar Wright's script and characters have the depth of a Hanna-Barbera cartoon; and the skills of a talented cast are mostly wasted.
John Hamm and Jamie Foxx both hint at true malevolence in their bank robbers; but Wright gives them Tarantino-light dialog that never let's them release the inner monsters. The biggest weakness is 'Baby' himself.
He is defined by other characters' throwaway lines, but never defines himself. There is no insight as to why he does the things he does...and, the film's 3rd-act payoff is limp. Reviewers are having such a woody for the music, movement and style that they are missing the empty people in the cars.
Worth seeing...but, it's not a great film.
