Review of Baby Driver (2017) by Matt%20 F — 01 Jul 2017

If you're at all familiar with the work of Edgar Wright, then you know exactly what you're getting yourself into. Simply put, Baby Driver is an exhilarating thrill ride from start to finish. It has been such a long time since I have experienced a film that boasted such a compelling story, intriguing characters, breathtaking action sequences, and genuine laugh-out-loud humor.

I could go on for hours about how captivating and well executed the numerous car chases are, but anyone who has already read any review about this movie has no doubt heard the endless praise they've received.

What struck me as even more incredible where the other various technical aspects, including the sharp colorful look that the movie maintains throughout, and Wright's perfect integration of the film's carefully crafted soundtrack, which miraculously is perfectly synchronized with the events of the film.

If you've seen it, then I shouldn't need to elaborate, but even simple things like the closing of doors or the firing of shotguns are in perfect rhythm with the music. My only gripe with the film, and it is a minor one, is that I wish Baby's love interest was fleshed out a little more, with more character, and possibly stronger motivations for some of her more consequential decisions.

Other than that, all of the leads deliver strong performances, especially Ansel Elgort and Jon Hamm. The script is extremely clever and well-written, and the film is untouchable with regards to the technical aspects.

Essentially, it is exactly what I was hoping for when I walked in, another one of Wright's thrill rides, definitely see it if you have not.
