Review of Babine (2008) by Philip S — 29 Dec 2008
A fantastic tale in the vein of 'Big Fish" about a simpleton in a time-lost town. Interesting enough, but lacked meat in places, repetitive in others. Having a charming setting and fantastic events isn't enough to earn 5 stars in my books and I question the scope of the culture of people who would give it such a lofty rating.
You've seen this simpleton before - he's nothing new. It's the inventor who saves the film and makes the plot compelling. Sure, it's fantasy, but there's a fine line between fantasy and silliness and at times the movie takes the easy way out - "of course it could happen that way - it's fantasy! Anything goes!" instead of finding the fantastic within the realism.
A rental, I'd say. Better yet, rent "Big Fish" instead - a much better film.
