I saw this movie on the big screen when it came out in 1987. I was profoundly moved and felt the same on viewing the DVD on my big screen TV. Its such a simple story a very well told simple story. Other reviews explore plot.

I will say that there is an air of mystery about Babette, how gracefully she accepts the austere surroundings she now lives in Denmark. She slyly steals her way into the hearts of all the Citizens of Juttland.

Though a french catholic she never condescends her patrons religion. When Babette's secret is revealed we realize that she sacrificed all for her little danish neighborhood. All involved realize that their austere life will continue as before EXCEPT FOR THE MEMORY OF THE GREATEST MEAL OF THEIR LIFETIME.

The meal brought about peace and resolutions in the small religious order. A very great film My highest rating 5 stars. One of my all time favorite movies. I cannot comprehend those who do not understand this movie!!
