Review of Babette's Feast (1987) by Eve L — 27 Nov 2010
Fascinating and beautiful film which feels like a fable, and one could interpret to be a metaphor for life. A French woman, a well-reknowned chef in her time, is driven out to the Danish countryside by politics and humbly prepares simple gruel for the community who takes her in, never letting on who she was.
Then she wins the lottery, and spends it all preparing a fancy French feast for the community, while they expect it is her goodbye dinner because of course she would want to go back. But she doesn't.
