Review of Babel (2006) by Maeva F — 03 Aug 2013
A film about stupid people doing stupid things. I would've given this a lower rating if not for the acting, cohesive non-linear story-telling, and the Japan segment, which included Rinko Kikuchi's brilliant performance as a deaf-mute girl.
Other than that, it was a pretty infuriating film about how people interconnect from dumbass mistakes. I get that it portrays carelessness but how they stretch it is beyond ridiculous to the point of moronic behaviour.
The overarching carelessness makes 3/5 of its characters very unlikeable, particularly the USA/Mexico segment with the housekeeper. Maybe it was intended for them to be unlikeable but if it was expecting me to feel sympathy or sorrow for them, not one bit.
As I've said earlier, the Japan segment is the best segment of this film and is probably the film's saving grace. I was actually hoping that the film was just about the deaf-mute girl or maybe cut it out from the film and make an entirely separate film, since the segment has the least connection to the story's catalyst.
Overall, an alright film but man, is it a stupid film.
