Review of Babel (2006) by David G — 17 Jun 2012
Engaging drama that breaks down the walls of culture, language and race to bring together four different, but interconnected, stories from around the world. It begins innocently enough with a Moroccan goat farmer acquiring a rifle to help his two young sons fend off jackals, but this one decision sets off a chain of events that brings disaster not only to their own lives but to an unhappy American couple on vacation, their Mexican housekeeper back in California and a traumatised, deaf-mute Japanese girl in Tokyo.
Some of the stories are not as strong as others (you'll be disappointed whenever the action leaves Japan) but the film is greater than the sum of its parts with strong storytelling, nail biting drama and fearless performances from the multinational cast.
