Review of Babel (2006) by Dipesh T — 11 Aug 2012
There are 5 languages used; Moroccan, American English, Mexican, Japanese and one symbolical language. It's that film which had changed my thoughts about film. When the police in Morocco start to shot the gun to the boys and their father, I had quit watching from that scene & after some months I had watched it, because I couldn't. The reason is that it's too much powerful, too much nihilistic! I was completely drowned in this Inarritu's masterpiece. From that moment, I had started to take film seriously.
Watching this film, I've had this feeling that each & every character (even those irrelevant characters) that appears in this film is in pain. Every rock, every house, every road, every mountain that are shown in Morocco is in pain. Every building, every hospital, every street, every restaurant, every vehicle that are shown in Japan is in pain. Every bush of the desert, the chairs in the marriage party that are shown in Mexico is in pain. In short, the Universe is in pain.
I am a huge fan of Inarritu and Babel is the highest form of hyperlink film so far. He has achieved more simplicity in Babel than in his previous two masterpiece 21 Grams and Amorres Perros. I am not surprised that it has got polarized reactions from critics. A must see. One of my best film.
