Review of Babe: Pig in the City (1998) by Paul F — 19 Feb 2009
Long story short Babe was better but Babe in the city was still pretty good. It was much more absurd with all kinds of antics. It also seemed a little bit darker than the first, however stimulates one to think even deeper than the first one. The stoic Orangutan really made me think as well as the rationalizing scheming monkey's. You really could not only see human issues but also such as the grim realities of sheerly trying to survive. We really don't get how depended we are on society.
Babe's idealism is refreshing but also painful in contrast with the world. In many senses I felt Pig in the City was more for adults than children. At least on an intellectual level, though it was done in a way I could see many children understanding as well.
I felt some of the characters did not make sense as to what they were doing and why. Why were the animals taken to the hospital and why, experimentation? Why would all of a sudden chef's start wrestling with the Mrs and try to take Pig. I assume cook em up. It just seemed a bit out of protocol of how things would normally happen.
There was so much exaggeration that it really made Pig in the City seem more like an absurd work of art than a cohesive story. Yet still there was enough to entertain though I'm not sure what the end goal was, entertainment, thought provocation, or art. I'm sure probably a little bit of all of the above however it seemed to stretch itself just a bit too far. A noble effort in any case and worth seeing but won't live up the its already classic status predecessor Babe.
