Review of Azumi (2003) by Aaron K — 02 Aug 2012
Kitamura has a way with action that no one else has. He takes ahold of it and makes everything simple into a powerful visual style that is as yet unmatched by his western rivals. Critical reviews on here have been far too harsh, and completely alienate the broad fanbase that the Anime/Manga genre has.
This is a slash-fest, with intricate and well-shot fight sequences straight out of its original Manga. Why Kitamura and Azumi receive such criticism for making stylistic creations over something deeper like Seven Samurai, is beyond me.
Zack Snyder does it all the time, and he still gets regular work! For an exceptional comic-book style fight-fest, watch Azumi and enjoy the blood-spraying splendor in all its glory! Admittedly shallow, it honestly doesn't matter.
It is not a guilty pleasure if you are already guilty of being a fan of the genre. ENJOY!
