Review of Away We Go (2009) by Geoffrey W — 19 Apr 2010
Away We Go is both very funny and heartfelt. Sam Mendes is able to once again show his directing skill getting wonderful performances from his leads. Mendes also continually has some of the best blocking in his scenes as well.
The narrative structure of the film is built upon the journey to find home and it holds up throughout most of the film, though there are a few areas were it loses steam and drags a bit. The music selection is also a bit mixed in terms of its effectiveness.
These two elements hinder the film, especially as they are most noticeable in the later end of the 2nd act and into the 3rd act. The conclusion is quite strong however and overall, the structure does give the viewer a sense of completeness, like the characters have come to a better place - a place where we want them to be.
And, this is the main success of Away We Go, its ability to show the growth of the characters and satisfy its intended audience. 8/10.
