Review of Away We Go (2009) by Mike R — 01 May 2010
This looked and sounded to be a movie right up my alley. But as always looks can be deceiving and that is exactly how I feel about this movie the right look just not enough story. The music and cinematography are great yet I feel like the actors/story gets lost in all of this.
Maya Rudolph in the lead never sold me and neither did ¾ of the life lessons along the way. Yes there were enjoyable scenes with Rudolph's characters old friend Allison Janney and her irrational husband Jim Gaffigan with Janney a scene stealer.
Also Maggie Gyllenhaal as a hippie mother and her radical parenting is a very humorous scene. All the other little stories seem forced or just trying to be something they weren't. Besides the movie itself tries way too hard to be an "Indie" film and doesn't just try to make us want to root for the young couple.
All in all I was rather disappointed by Away We Go as a whole, some of the cast is held back by a dull script and others are just out of there element. If you happen to flick by this one day when there is nothing to do then maybe I would recommend it, but can't endorse anyone to waste the time in renting or buying the movie.
